Major decisions included whether to nap through the afternoon or get up for happy hour at the swim-up bar, and where best to catch the sunset (answer: from the end of the infinity pool overlooking the Gulf of Thailand). Continue reading →

Our driver races with the dawn. We bounce around a bit in the backseat of the tuk-tuk, as it roars up the road to Angkor in the humid darkness. Even louder than the throaty motorcycle engine, the song of cicadas fills the air. Our guide, Mr. Soeu, sits opposite us, slender and neat in his long-sleeved button down shirt. He twists around to peer forward past the bobbing helmet of the driver. The road is far from crowded, but there are other tuk-tuks, a handful of scooters, and even a few bicycles all moving in the same direction. Continue reading →

Our first day in Cambodia began with a row of uniformed customs officials, splendid and unsmiling and endless. They collected visa fees and photos and scrutinized and stamped and handed passports up the line while I shifted from foot to foot with excitement and tried to look like the sort of person who should definitely be given her passport back and admitted to their country.

The town of Siem Reap was an intoxicating jumble of extremes: the sun, the dust, the humidity, the sense that an encroaching jungle might just take back this crumbling mix of faded colonial architecture and humble shacks at any moment. Continue reading →

It is important to stay philosophical when fermenting, because you definitely win some and lose some.

I started the sauerkraut project with one giant stone crock, eleven heads of cabbage, and a lot of hope. Progress was slow, but when I finally, after several weeks of waiting, peeked into the crock, there was no doubt that the fermentation process had started. Tiny bubbles and a rich smell—a little like beer and a little like vinegar—assured me that cabbage was indeed becoming sauerkraut. Continue reading →

One of my food goals for 2012 was to try my hand at making gnocchi from scratch. I love these little potato dumplings, whether served with a simple marinara sauce, sage and browned butter, or lamb ragu. I bought a gnocchi board just to encourage myself, but it languished in the pantry for a few months awaiting the right opportunity. Last weekend, that opportunity came. Continue reading →

Book club was at my house last night. The book was Joy for Beginners, by Erica Bauermeister. This may be the perfect book club selection—it is the story of a group of women who gather to celebrate their friend Kate’s recovery from cancer, and then each accept the challenge to try something they thought they would never do. Adventures and growth ensue.

How could we not end up discussing fear and slightly scary wishes and ideas for what we each could do to challenge ourselves? Continue reading →

It may have been only a few days short of spring, but you wouldn’t have known it. Just as I was parking, huge, fat flakes of snow started falling. As I rushed toward the museum, I pulled my hood forward over my face and the wet, sleety snow plastered the front of my coat and pants. Continue reading →

It has been a long dry spell between travel adventures for us, something that is particularly difficult to tolerate when those two words--travel and adventure, have stitched themselves across my heart, very nearly visible through the thin network of ribs and skin, and have become part of who I am and who I want to be.

But adventure is not exclusively found in travel to faraway places. I try to remember this when my wandering feet get itchy. Life is full of every day adventures too—new experiences and ideas and flavors, right here at home.

Last weekend, we went to a cooking class called Night Markets of Bangkok at PCC, a local food coop. The class was taught by Becky Selengut, local chef and author of Good Fish: Sustainable Seafood Recipes from the Pacific Coast. This was a demonstration class—the classroom was set up with rows of little tables with place settings, where we sat in twos, facing the kitchen. Becky cooked while talking us through the steps in her recipes. Continue reading →

Having a jar of sourdough starter in the refrigerator has expanded my baking repertoire already. After my recent success with sourdough bread, I started thinking pizza crust. I’ve written about various homemade pizzas before, including Cindy’s Pizza Rustica, Victoria’s grilled pizza, and some easy premade crusts that inspired a variety of creative topping combinations. I eat pizza a lot.
The inspiration for making sourdough starter came from Tara at Tea & Cookies. I’m always interested in kitchen science, so I read her recent posts on the subject with interest. And I’ll ferment anything that will hold still long enough. But honestly, I’m more of a throw-it-in-the-bread-machine kind of baker, so I didn’t really have a compelling urge to try making my own starter.

That is, until the perfect reason presented itself. Continue reading →

When in Vancouver, we eat ramen--the real, fresh, hand-made kind that engages all of the senses—the ramen dreams are made of.

We are on an ongoing quest for the best ramen, but it’s not really about declaring a winner. It’s about the journey.

The last time we were in Vancouver we ate at Motomachi, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka, and Benkei, arguably some of the best ramen-ya (ramen shops) to be found in Vancouver. We had also planned to try Kintaro, but found ourselves standing outside the closed restaurant on a Monday afternoon, noses pressed to the glass, gazing at a counter heaped with mountains of noodle dough and tantalizing piles of freshly made ramen noodles, and had to go away unsatisfied.

This time, we are determined not to miss out again. Continue reading →

Nearly a year ago now, I read a blog post about Salsify in Black Forest Ham at The Wednesday Chef. I had never seen salsify before, but the case for trying it was compelling. And I thought, in that way … Continue reading →

Making homemade spaetzle is not particularly difficult and well worth a small investment of time. The irregular little dumplings are also called little sparrows, as they are shaped somewhat like a little bird, with a pointy end resembling a beak, from where the dough drops into boiling water to cook. They are excellent served simply with browned butter, salt and pepper, but also serve as an ideal stand in for rice or pasta as a base for a sauce. Continue reading →

We had a snow week last week, here in Seattle. For those of you who live elsewhere, let me explain. Mostly it just rains here in the winter. Chilly and dark to be sure, but not exactly extreme. We might get the occasional dusting of snow, but once every year or two it just keeps going and really snows, often with some freezing rain for good measure, and the city grinds to a stop for a time. We’re just not equipped for this and it can quickly turn from fun to a real drag if you actually have to leave the house. Continue reading →

We are seated in the back room of the Swingside Café, a sort of a candlelit sun porch used on busy weekends that is reached by scooting sideways past the kitchen and out the back door, dodging wait staff laden with plates, then down a few steps into the glassed-in annex. It is more obvious back here that these Fremont Avenue restaurants are a thin layer of converted houses, just a step from a neighborhood of actual lived-in houses.

We sip glasses of Zinfandel and dredge fresh focaccia through saucers of olive oil. As I savor my plate of Farfalle with Wild Boar and Venison Bolognese Sauce, the same scene is enacted over and over outside the rain-dotted window. Continue reading →
