The Primary Bind

My friend Rob and I made sausage! Yes, sausage! In case you can’t tell, I am tremendously excited about making sausage. Rob had done this before, and also has all the necessary equipment, which basically amounts to a KitchenAid mixer with a grinder and a sausage stuffing attachment, so he’s a very good guy for a novice sausage maker to know.

Armed with our respective copies of Charcuterie by Michael Ruhlman, we settled on the basic sausage recipe with red wine and garlic. Continue reading

How to roast pumpkin seeds

Bundle up well and go shopping for pumpkins. Wade into the brilliant orange pile searching for a pumpkin that will support your artistic vision and will also rest firmly on its kiester without tipping over. Set the best three or four contenders in a row, keeping a sharp lookout for children who might snatch them right out from under you while you stroke your chin and consider each in turn. When your nose and hands are freezing and your companion in this expedition is starting to sigh, grab the biggest, but not without a backward glance at the ones you leave behind. Continue reading

Pork and Perplexity

Season 19 of The Amazing Race started a few weeks ago, and with it our biweekly dinner and viewing parties resumed. Frankly, it promises to be a perplexing season when it comes to choosing teams to bet on. Ethan & Jenna, both former Survivor winners and thus strong contenders, have already been eliminated, while Bill & Cathi, the obvious weak link, were still in after episode two. Go figure.

End of Summer Casserole

Hello, anxiety, my old friend. So you’ve come to pay me a visit. Sit down. Have a cup of tea (It’s herbal—neither of us needs any extra caffeine). Will you be staying long?

Life is full right now. My head is full. Too much to think about, work is nutty, lists swirl in my head like dust devils, and there just aren’t enough hours in the day for everything I want to accomplish.
